Liam – A true ‘Shared Apprentice’
The start of the 2019 academic year saw ISG plc starting a new Construction project in Barnstaple – The North Devon Enterprise Centre. A brand new enterprise centre funded by Devon County Council as well as various grants including that of the Heart of the South West’s (HotSW LEP) Growth Deal.
As an already established host, ISG approached Shared Apprenticeships in the hope to be able to provide a placement for a technical Apprentice on said site for 12 months out of the Apprenticeship duration. With this, Shared Apprenticeships worked closely with the local college (Petroc) and CITB to find a suitable Apprentice.
Liam, who was already enrolled on the full time L3 Construction in the Built Environment course at Petroc approached Shared Apprenticeships to express his interest in the Apprenticeship. All parties found Liam to be a perfect fit and he soon became employed by Shared Apprenticeships and started on site with ISG.
Approaching the end of the originally agreed 12 months, ISG extended their host contract for another month but, as first thought, couldn’t offer Liam a carry on placement as all their work was out of area.
This is where Shared Apprenticeships really shine; Continually working closely with main contractors and their supply chains, Shared Apprenticeships found Liam a perfect follow on placement with Kier Construction on their new site at Stratton School, Bude.
Both main contractors extremely happy with the way everything has worked so smoothly, ISG happy to be able to host a great Apprentice for as long as they could and Kier pleased that they can host a part qualified technical Apprentice who lives just a stone’s throw from site.
