Outstanding Apprentice named Regions Best
The outstanding commitment and dedication of a Shared Apprenticeships South West apprentice, working with Midas Construction has been celebrated with the presentation of a top industry award.
Adam Robertson was revealed as the winner of the construction industry Outstanding Apprentice of the Year accolade at the Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship Awards recently.
The 25 year old from Bristol impressed the judges with his hard work, dedication, and positive attitude towards both his work and study.
Adam said: “I was really shocked to win and couldn’t believe it when I heard my name being announced.
“This award helps to show that hard work does pay off. I wanted to prove myself to the Midas team I was working with; to show them that I could work to the highest standards that they expect. It has been really exciting, a huge learning curve and a real rite of passage for me.”
Adam worked at Bristol’s Print Hall development with Midas Construction, part of Midas Group, one of the UK’s largest independent construction and property services providers.
The award winning scheme used traditional and modern techniques and materials to transform the former Bristol Post newspaper print press building to house 267 studio bedrooms across three blocks of accommodation, bringing much needed activity back to an area which was derelict for many years.
Gaining work experience initially as a General Operative, Adam was keen to help himself forge a lasting career with Midas and the construction sector. He was put in touch with Shared Apprenticeships South West who employed him. As part of his apprenticeship Adam was enrolled on a Construction Technician Apprenticeship which kept him working at Print Hall until project completion, he then moved to work at St Georges while he continued his studies.
Adam is also a member of the Young Apprenticeship Ambassador Network, visiting schools to talk to pupils about the range of rewarding benefits available through apprenticeship training.
“It’s good to celebrate apprenticeships,” he said. “They’re a fantastic option for people of all ages and backgrounds, and a great pathway into any chosen career.”
Michelle Cole, Midas Group Community Engagement Manager, said: “We are thrilled that Adam’s hard work has been celebrated with this award. He is a pivotal member of the Midas team and a real advocate for the benefits of embarking on an apprenticeship.
“Investing in our next generation of construction workers is vital to the ongoing growth and success of our sector. Apprenticeships are a key way to support our emerging workforce, invest in the communities we live and work in and showcase the rewarding careers available within construction.”
The Bristol and Bath Apprenticeship Awards aim to shine a spotlight on the area’s outstanding apprentices over a range of sectors from construction and engineering to hairdressing and hospitality. The awards evening was held recently with Adam among those being celebrated for their hard work throughout their apprenticeship.
Adam, who is currently studying for his Level 3 Construction qualification with Bath College, is being supported throughout his training by Shared Apprenticeships South West, an organisation that helps individuals to start to build a career in the sector. Employing apprentices directly and finding them relevant placements with contractors across the region, SASW enables them to complete their apprenticeship whilst also arranging the necessary college courses.
Emma Norton, Programme Manager for SASW, said: “Adam is a talented and dedicated apprentice who really has shone whilst with us at Shared Apprenticeships South West. It is so rewarding to be able to support and work alongside our apprentices as they learn and grow.
“We are so pleased that the work of apprentices is being highlighted with award events like this, which shows that this route is hugely beneficial for those keen to begin a career in the construction industry.”
