Shared Apprenticeships

Various Construction Trade Apprenticeships

If you would like a lifelong career in construction and to earn while you learn then an apprenticeship with Shared Apprenticeships South West will be perfect for you.

We work with top construction firms and are currently looking for willing trade apprentices in the specified area. These trades include, but are not limited to;

– Bricklaying; Bricklayers lay bricks, pre-cut stone, concrete blocks and other types of building blocks in mortar to construct and repair walls, foundations, partitions, arches and other structures. Bricklayers work outdoors and may have to work at heights or in tunnels and shafts, usually working in teams. They may work on a range of projects, from creating a single conservatory to building brand new homes or large commercial developments.

– Carpentry; A carpenter is a trained craftsperson skilled in woodwork. They measure, mark, cut, shape, fit and finish timber – either by hand or with power tools. Wood is an essential part of just about any building. Carpenters work on the roof, floor and walls by making and installing parts such as floor joists, floorboards, roof trusses and wall partitions. They fit all kinds of interior woodwork, such as staircases, doors, skirting boards, cupboards and kitchens.

– Painting and Decorating; A painter and decorator make walls and ceilings shipshape and attractive using paint, wallpaper and other finishes. Specialist techniques include applying decorative paint finishes such as stencils, colour glaze, graining, marbling and lettering. A painter and decorator’s job includes working out what materials are needed for a particular project by taking measurements or looking at job specifications or drawings.

– Drylining; A dry liner creates the walls and rooms in a new building. They also hide pipes and wires, create space for insulation and smooth out uneven surfaces during renovation work. These tradespeople are skilled in building the internal walls in all types of buildings, using metal stud partitioning and plasterboard sheets. They also put in partitions that can move location later if need be, along with suspended ceilings and raised flooring.

– Roofing; Roofers are responsible for laying a variety of finishes to a roof, as well as maintaining and repairing them. Types of the roof will include slates and tiles. Extra care must be taken with regards to health and safety and a fear of heights is not suggested!

With no experience necessary, an apprenticeship is perfect for those coming out of education (GSCE’s, A-levels or college) or someone who wants a career change.

Generally, apprentices spend 4 days at a work placement gaining evidence for their NVQ and 1 day at college learning and gaining diplomas in their chosen trade. Progress through the levels will be managed by an ATS (Apprentice Training Schedule) which sets out the mandatory and optional units of work that need to be completed.

Being employed by Shared Apprenticeships South West means you are guaranteed the opportunity to complete your apprenticeship with one or more of our host contractors. You will receive the national minimum wage for your age (which is higher than the national apprenticeship wage) and you will also get paid for your college day. At SASW, your dedicated mentor is in place to help and guide you through your apprenticeship.
